Stack Stats & Practice Tracker

Most golfers remember the worst shot from their last round. That doesn't mean it is the shot type costing them the most strokes. Stack Stats helps you understand your game objectively, while Practice Tracker turns the range into an opportunity to measure performance and consistency.

Stack Stats: what is actually holding your scores back?

Stack Stats evaluates the individual shots in your round in context. Instead of only counting fairways, greens or total putts, it uses a strokes-gained approach to ask: How much did this shot improve or worsen my position compared with a golfer at the level I want to play?

The result is a more complete picture of performance. A tee shot might miss the fairway but leave you in a great position; a green in regulation might still leave a difficult 20-metre birdie putt. Traditional stats cannot always distinguish those outcomes.

Driving

Examine the value of your tee shots: distance, playable position, mistakes and penalties. It helps distinguish an actual driving weakness from one frustrating shot.

Approach

Measure the quality of approach shots from a range of distances. Learn whether hitting more greens or controlling the proximity of misses offers the bigger opportunity.

Short game

Understand what happens around the green, including chips, pitches, bunker play and recovery shots. Identify whether your misses tend to leave manageable putts.

Putting

Putts are measured relative to where they began. Great lag putting and reliable shorter putts can be recognised more accurately than with total putts alone.

How do you enter a round?

The process is built around recording each shot. You select the starting lie, the distance to the hole, the club and relevant penalties, then add the shot and continue. TheStack handles the strokes-gained calculations behind the scenes.

The manufacturer also describes scorecard photo import on supported versions. Exact availability can change, but the basic aim stays the same: get useful performance feedback without requiring a complicated spreadsheet.

Choose the comparison that makes sense

Not every golfer needs to compare themselves with the PGA Tour. Stack Stats allows performance comparisons across handicap levels, helping you set expectations that are both useful and realistic. Understanding what a scratch golfer typically achieves from a certain position can make a target handicap feel much more actionable.

One round is interesting. Several rounds are more useful. As your sample grows, you can distinguish repeatable patterns from normal good and bad days. Use the trend screens to examine development across training blocks or an entire season.

Practice Tracker: measure what happens on the range

Track carry distances and consistency alongside your on-course Stack Stats analysis.

Stack Radar can capture practice-shot data beyond speed training, including estimated carry and ball-speed information. Practice Tracker organises that feedback so you can review sessions, follow each club over time and see whether consistency is improving.

The manufacturer now offers Practice Tracker at no additional subscription cost with Stack Radar, subject to having a compatible app platform. It is a useful feature even for golfers who do not own the weighted speed-training club.

Organise by club and session

Instead of mixing everything into one bucket of shots, keep an eye on the club being used and the goal for the session. Measure what your regular swing actually delivers.

Understand shot-to-shot spread

Average carry is only half the story. Practice Tracker's Spread metric estimates the range around your average that is expected to contain around 95% of shots. A tighter spread suggests more predictable distance control.

A practical example: your 7-iron

Imagine an average carry of 145 metres with a spread of plus or minus 7 metres. That suggests many of your typical shots will finish somewhere around 138–152 metres, rather than consistently landing at exactly 145. That information is more useful for course management than remembering the longest 7-iron you once hit.

It can also change how you practise. If the average distance is fine but the spread is enormous, improving contact and consistency may help more than trying to hit the club farther.

Your practice becomes more useful when you can compare results across sessions.
Coach Gurney's view: Stats is the diagnosis; practice is the treatment. Use the data to identify the part of your game that has the biggest opportunity, then use the appropriate training mode — speed, wedging or putting — to work on it.

How do Stats and Practice Tracker work together?

If your on-course data shows poor results from approach shots, Practice Tracker can help you understand your carry windows with key irons and wedges. If driving speed appears to be a limitation, speed training can become part of the plan. If putting is leaking shots, turn to Stack Putting. This is how one connected ecosystem can guide a full training week.

What do you need?

  • For Stack Stats: an eligible Stack App membership; you do not need the weighted Stack trainer or Stack Radar to enter round data.
  • For Practice Tracker: Stack Radar and a supported iOS app version. The manufacturer currently lists Practice Tracker as included free with Stack Radar.
  • For speed training: TheStack hardware plus compatible speed measurement. This is a different requirement.

Stats and Practice Tracker FAQ

How many rounds should I record?

Start with the next round, but avoid big conclusions from one result. A growing sample over several rounds is much more reliable.

Can I compare with my handicap rather than a tour player?

Yes. Select a comparison level relevant to your ability and the level you're aiming for.

Can I use Stack Stats without buying the speed trainer?

Yes, subject to the appropriate app membership. The scoring tools are not dependent on owning the adjustable speed club.

Is Practice Tracker free with Stack Radar?

The manufacturer currently advertises no extra subscription for Practice Tracker when using Stack Radar on its supported platform. Other app features and memberships may still have separate requirements.

Does Practice Tracker use ball speed or carry?

It can track estimated carry, ball speed, consistency and shot history from supported Stack Radar data. Treat all radar estimates as measurement aids rather than perfect predictions.
