Compatible Speed Devices

You do not need to buy another radar if you already own one that measures dry swings accurately. But different devices behave very differently, especially when it comes to automatic data transfer into TheStack App. Use this guide to make the right decision before ordering.

Why speed training needs a particular type of radar

TheStack speed trainer is swung without striking a golf ball. Your device needs to record clubhead speed from a dry swing, rather than only tracking ball flight. A sophisticated launch monitor that works brilliantly for full shots may not necessarily capture these practice swings.

There is a second question too: Does the radar send the measurement straight into the App, or will you need to enter each speed yourself? Manual entry can still work, but automatic connection makes sessions easier to follow.

TheStack's currently listed compatible devices

The manufacturer maintains a changing list of tested speed devices. The following examples are drawn from that list; firmware, exact models and platform support should always be checked before purchasing.

Device / family Non-impact speed Direct Stack App integration
Stack Radar Yes Yes, on supported iOS / Android / Web
Garmin Approach R10 Yes Supported on iOS with appropriate setup
Rapsodo MLM2PRO / MLM2XPRO Yes Supported on iOS with required firmware and app setup
FlightScope Mevo+, Mevo Gen2 Yes Supported on iOS
FlightScope X3, X2 and selected related models Yes Supported on iOS for listed models
PRGR Black Pocket / Red Pocket Yes Manual speed entry into Stack App
TrackMan 4 (TPS) Yes Manual entry or model-specific workflow
Voice Caddie SC200 Plus / selected Garmin handheld models Yes Typically manual entry

Other specific models from SkyTrak, Foresight, Sport Sensors and Yupiteru may also qualify. We deliberately haven't claimed that every radar produced by a listed brand will work; model-level capability matters.

Why we recommend Stack Radar for most new buyers

Official high-resolution Stack Radar showing portable speed monitor detail
Stack Radar is built around measuring golf swing speed and integrating with compatible Stack training workflows.

Stack Radar is designed to work with TheStack. It measures practice swing speed without ball contact, can record ball speed during hitting sessions and connects to the App via Bluetooth on supported platforms. That makes it a simpler starting point for golfers who want to train rather than troubleshoot equipment.

Speed training

Keep your training measurements flowing into the App without manual data entry. Radar integration is particularly useful when a programme asks for a range of weight combinations.

Stack Wedging and Practice Tracker

These other modes specifically rely on Stack Radar for the relevant shot data. A PRGR or a compatible Garmin for speed training is not necessarily a replacement in those modules.

What does Stack Radar measure?

The manufacturer lists swing speed, ball speed and estimated carry distance and smash factor. The carry estimate is useful for practice but should not be treated as a perfect ball-flight measurement under every condition. Consistent placement, correct mode and attention to setup are important.

Platform compatibility: an important difference

The iOS app supports a wider selection of third-party devices with connected workflows. The manufacturer currently advises that Stack Radar is the only radar offering a Bluetooth connection within the Android/Web versions of TheStack App. This doesn't automatically mean you cannot use a different device to measure speed — it means you may need a different data-entry process.

If you're using a Garmin R10 or Rapsodo unit, check the manufacturer steps for firmware and the relevant companion apps. Do not assume a phone upgrade or a device firmware update is unnecessary.

Coach Gurney's buying advice: If you own a listed compatible radar and are happy with its workflow, start with the NZ$497 speed trainer. If you don't have a compatible device, the NZ$997 Stack + Radar package is our straightforward complete setup.
